There are many considerations when choosing a color. You need to think about aesthetics. Are you painting your front door for personal, or selling purposes? If painting for personal you may just be looking for a change. Don’t be afraid to try a new color! A splash of orange or yellow makes a bold statement. If you want to play it after, a dark green or gray also work. If you are putting your home on the market, a more traditional color is okay. You can play it safe with browns, white, or black.
Do any colors add value? It’s been known that while brighter colors do catch a buyer’s eye, black front doors seem to have to best resale value. Take a drive around your neighborhood to see what other homes have for the front door paint color. Also, consider your home’s existing exterior and choose a complementary color.
Painting your entry is a great way to add curb appeal. Incorporate your home’s natural surroundings for inspiration. If you have a smaller house, consider tricking the eye by painting the front door the same color as the siding. Add ornamental features like planters on each side of the door, or on the porch if possible.
Avoid “Stop Colors” or Radical Colors. Colors can look very different in different lighting. The best way to choose a color is in its planned environment. If you are unsure, stick to complementary colors. These are located across from each other on a color wheel. What is the style of your home? If it’s a traditional white Colonial with black shutters, a black door is a classic look. If you have unique architecture, dare to go bolder.
Should the front door be lighter or darker than the house?
Again it is a personal preference, but a majority of the time the door has its own personality. It can also match the shutters, or framework around the windows. Some homeowners look to Good Feng Shui. The color to paint it depends on the direction your door is located. For example, south-facing doors should use orange or red colors. North facing should be black or blue paint colors. Remember to keep your entrance clutter-free since this is where the energy starts and enters your home.
