Tips for hanging garland (inside)

Holiday decorations can bring back nostalgia and joy. From handmade ornaments to shining lights, decorating for the holidays always feels extra special. Decorating can be hard work, but Wallauer’s is here to offer some helpful advice to make it easier to deck the halls!

One of the more challenging items to hang is garland inside your home. Where do you place it? How do you secure it? No need for a hammer and nails. We have tips for hanging this traditional holiday swag.

Types of Garland?

What type of garland will you be using? If you are using real greenery, be aware of sap. Also, remember real roping will dry out eventually. Fake garland is usually made with wiring and tends to be heavier. The wiring can easily be bent, making decorating and adding lights easier. Whether real or fake, this festive greenery looks great decorated, or on its own. If you are winding garland down your stairs banister, twist it from the top of the railing to the bottom, interwinding it between spindles. You can also rely on floral wire or zip-ties to secure your greens. Or, you can add a pop of color with decorative garland ties. These cause fewer scratches.

How to Hang Garland on the Mantel

The fireplace mantel is usually a go-to spot for holiday garland. Here, you can simply place the garland on the mantle, leaving some extra for hanging over the edges. Trim with Christmas candles or stocking holders.

How to Hang Garland on the Walls or Doorways

If you are looking to decorate your rooms with greenery, simply hang garland around the doorways.  This can be done with Command hooks. They safely secure to any surface without causing damage when removed. Be sure to look at the size and weight limit of the hooks. Heavily decorated garland may require higher weight limits. You can secure wires around the garland then loop them onto the hooks. Want to add holiday flair to your window treatments? Make use of your tension rod. Drape greenery above your windows by attaching it or wrapping it around the tension rod.
